On June 6, Class XXVIII gathered at the Boy Scouts of America Camp Manatoc thanks to arrangements by class member Jody Gildersleeve '12. The day began with breakfast and some discussions about next steps after graduation. Class President Mona Sarkar '12 and Vice President Kelly Pariso '12 led the discussion, with talks of class projects as well as social and learning events that could further connect the class and make a difference for local groups in need.
Later, Class XXVIII found out they were in for a special treat: an archery lesson! The group headed out to the range and with the help of camp volunteers, they were able to shoot the bow and arrows at targets. As one might imagine, a few friendly competitions
stemmed from this exercise. Witnesses can attest that overall it was the ladies who were better shots than the gentlemen! Next, the class enjoyed lunch in the historic dining lodge, one of the lone surviving wormy chestnut buildings in the United States. After lunch, the class engaged in a prop exercise. Each class member had previously drawn the name of one of their classmates and was assigned to bring a prop to describe that person. The exercise was very emotional at times, and at others - quite funny. After spending a year together, it was clear that the class had developed strong admiration for each other and accumulated their fair share of funny stories to remember.
Later in the evening it was time to meet at Goodyear's global airship operations blimp hangar for the graduation ceremony. Nearly 200 guests witnessed Class XXVIII graduate from Leadership Akron. Class President Mona Sarkar celebrated and encouraged her classmates with a powerful message, and presented grants to a handful of organizations chosen through Class 28's philanthropy project. We also had the honor of presenting the locally designed 2012 Barbara Mathews Award to Jody Gildersleeve '12, and were equally as honored to receive our own piece of local art as a gift from the class to their community, to be displayed in the Leadership Akron offices.
