Leadership Akron is proud to feature Class 24 graduate Doug Piekarz, who was recently named President and CEO of the Akron Zoo.


Doug, congratulations on becoming the new President and CEO of the Akron Zoo. How did it feel to receive the news?


I had no indication in advance from my board that I would be appointed President and CEO. They did a very professional job. I was in a group of 33 other people, many of whom spoke to me about the opportunity before they applied because we’ve worked together in the field. I encouraged everybody who talked to me about it to apply. I felt if my skills and abilities are not the skills and abilities the board is looking for, I would want somebody that I trust, know is ethical, and know is really a professional in the field. That’s what this role really needs. It needs that kind of a leader. (continued...)

Community Leadership Institutes A short-course (2-3 months) that introduces participants to principles and practices of community leadership. The CLI’s blend leadership development with community involvement and awareness, and can be customized for the specific needs of a company/organization.
