Junior Leadership Akron

What is Junior Leadership Akron?

Junior Leadership Akron is a non-profit program of Leadership Akron Alumni Association modeled after the Leadership Akron Signature program. The program provides monthly leadership and community exposure to high school juniors from both public and private schools in the greater Akron area.

Through a nine month curriculum of community-based experiences, participants become familiar with current issues, community and natural resources, and other factors influencing Akron's future.

The program is generously funded by the J.M. Smucker Company and FirstMerit Wealth Management Services/The Gertrude Orr Foundation.

Goals

Develop Leadership
Increase students' self-confidence by providing opportunities to practice and use leadership skills.

Showcase Community
Broaden and deepen students' connection to community.

Commitment to Service
Planting the seeds of service by encouraging students to serve others in their schools and communities.

When Does the Program Run?

The program begins in September with an overnight retreat where the participants are introduced to the goals of Junior Leadership Akron. The retreat allows students to meet each other and learn how to use their leadership skills to work together. From October through April, the class is involved in a series of interactive, hands-on activities which take place one day each month for 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The program culminates with a graduation ceremony in April.

Students are required to attend a mandatory September retreat and are expected at all program days. Two program day absences for any reason will result in removal from Junior Leadership Akron. A leadership book is integrated into the curriculum and students are expected to arrive prepared to discuss assigned readings for that session. There is a tuition fee of $100 per student; scholarships are available.
