Founded in 1996 in partnership with the Burton D. Morgan Foundation, the Philanthropy Project has enabled past classes of Leadership Akron to invest more than $100,000 back into the community. The GAR Foundation joined in this educational effort for several years by providing an additional grant of $10,000 each year. The project is designed to increase the understanding of philanthropy and improve its practice in the greater Akron area.
Since the 2013-14 class year, the funding for this project has been (and is currently) provided by the United Way of Summit County.
The Philanthropy Project provides each class the opportunity to experience grantmaking firsthand by investing $10,000 (the current amount of the Philanthropy Project grant) into the community. By going through the process of identifying their giving priorities, soliciting applications, and making funding decisions, each class enhances their knowledge of the area’s nonprofit landscape and the grantmaking process. Beginning in 2010-11, the philanthropy project was enhanced with opportunities for class members to “shadow” local funders’ program officers and/or distribution committees.
